A post about a small love affair with what was a pretty barren back garden.

I first went to see the couple who owned this home at the start of April 2026. The couple grew up in large Asian cities and haven’t had a garden before so weren’t sure where to start.

They’d had landscaping done but the lawn had all but died, and they wanted to support wildlife and weren’t too fixed on having another traditional lawn.

When I looked into it, the soil was incredible gritty and sandy, with minimal available nutrients. They had also had leatherjacket grubs destroy the remaining lawn – this was treated with a natural remedy and we went about sowing a meadow seed which was specifically for their soil type.

I bang on about soil a lot, and growing the right plants in the existing type of soil is so important both from an aesthetic perspective but also a cost perspective. No one wants to keep throwing money at something that is going to keep dying.

The seed mix we used was from Boston Seeds and is now absolutely thriving and jumping with wildlife. I am in love with the garden and it has brought so much joy to the couple who live there. We also planted two fruit trees in contained planters so the trees had access to the right nutrients – these are also thriving. We also planted up two veg planters with kale, strawberries, bay, thyme, rainbow chard and rosemary – all of which are used for cooking regularly.

During both visits, we’ve done companion gardening where I offer the opportunity to garden alongside me to learn about the garden and how to take care of it. We’ve had such a lovely time both in June and today, and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to shape this lovely space.

Today I returned to add two veg planters, a fig tree, some under planting of ivy under some large conifers and some winter interest by the way of winter jasmine. A butterfly landed on my work bag as if to say, thank you, and this post is to say, ‘you’re welcome!’. Come back again soon 🦋

Another absolute dream job courtesy of the local powerhouse and general incredible human Kim at Body Image Fitness – I’ve trained with Kim for a number of years before starting Superbloom Gardening.

Body Image Fitness aligns with everything I care about and being asked to help continue and enhance such an amazing space was really lovely. If you haven’t checked out the gym, do. It’s super inclusive and just an amazing community to be part of.

The actual brief for this was ‘please hide the ugly bins for next door’ – a totally understandable and reasonable request. The wall between next door and the gym is low, so we’ve fixed these planters with their trellis to the wall to create a natural screen. A different climber has been planted for each trellis to make it really beautiful and colourful.

We also added spring bulbs to keep the joy throughout the seasons.

Shoutout to FettleFrog for once again making my daft schemes come to life and generally being a good egg to work with on these schemes.

I have been so excited to do this project since Katie came to me with wonderful ideas and a very open mind.

I’ve wanted to incorporate a number of elements of this project since I started Superbloom. I ADORE the painted concrete to look like tiles – such a brilliant way to brighten up any yard.

I also have been holding onto this mustard filing cabinet in a hope someone would believe me when I said they could be turned into great planters very easily. It looks incredible. I love reusing materials and this is such a good way to save old items from landfill.

The planting is really lovely, ensuring we feed the pollinators across the season, with an apple tree providing blossom in spring, and echinacea and achillea providing later on into summer. We also added a jasmine and a wisteria because we wanted to make use of the wall space and grow upwards also.

Last but not least, John Fawcett created an incredible mural with some very tedious points of reference from me. Katie asked for a white rose – which was pushing at an open door because all three of us are from Yorkshire, and she also wanted a white dove, which is a lovely touch at the edge of the main wall.

I have absolutely LOVED doing this project in Whitley Bay.

The brief was something to dress the front of the house to create curb appeal after finishing the paint work recently. The house is so lovely and the front planters add the perfect finishing touch.

The back was intended to keep lots of room for the kids to run around, so we made three planters to create a cut flower garden and one which is fully safe for the kids to play with as everything is edible. We even added broccoli which is their fave veg to eat, so they can pick their own in the yard. I repotted the existing olive and added smaller pots to soften the space, so it is also a relaxing environment to enjoy a coffee and/or wine when the kids are in bed.

It’s four months of Superbloom! I tried to make a post at three months and Instagram kept crashing so here it is. I’ve been doing some lovely things and with some amazing highlights.

A post to commemorate finishing my biggest and most complex project to date!

This new-build garden had it all: crazy PH soil, waterlogging, clay for days and leatherjacket grubs to boot!

I’ve added a tonne of compost to improve the soil, using no-dig to suppress the grass. Nematodes have treated the pest infestation and bog-friendly plants have been put where they will thrive, because some things can’t be rectified. I also found about eight golf balls during this job because it’s built on an old golf course.

The planting created a cottage garden border with lots of classic babes like hollyhock, salvia and foxgloves.

This was the first front garden I was asked to do … I bloody love doing front gardens.

This was done just six weeks ago, which is hard to believe considering how well it’s taken and established.

I bang on about soil ALL OF THE TIME … but one of the reasons this garden is thriving is because the soil is incredibly healthy – something I start with on all of my projects as without good soil you don’t get happy plants.

I’ve got more front gardens happening in June and I can’t wait!

The space was overrun with grasses which thrive in nitrogen-rich soils, thanks to an excess of dog visits. The aim of the project was to remove as much of the overgrown grasses and weeds and replace them with plants which encourage insects and pollinators.

I took advice from Wild Intrigue about what to plant to weave into wider work which is being carried out to help encourage wildlife in the wider Ouseburn and surrounding areas.

We also replanted a crab apple where a previous one had been run over and I left the gorgeous field buttercup which I hope will spread in coming years.

The plants that were chosen have to withstand being in a rain drain which is nutrient poor, being trampled on and have visits by dogs. I’m looking forwards to seeing how this scheme progresses, despite all of its challenges, it’s now a calmer and more welcoming space for humans and wildlife alike.
